Brand: Mason & Hamlin | Length: 5’8″ | Model: A | Finish: satin walnut | Year: 1980 | Serial number: 86477 | Bench: matching bench included
A classic American-made grand piano
We’ve done some major rebuilding to keep this American-made grand performing like new. The piano has new hammers, a new pinblock, and a stunning, refinished string frame (plate). New J. D. Grandt bass strings and Stephen Paulello and Mapes strings in the treble are visually stunning and acoustically superb. It’s soundboard and bridges are in excellent health. We’ll follow up with more about the tone and touch once our work is complete. The satin walnut finish is in good condition. This piano would be great for any piano student or serious pianist, as well as schools, church choir rooms, or other institutional settings. This piano offers a great way to own a very high-performing grand when floor space is at a premium!
Mason & Hamlin is a storied brand that has, at various points in its history, competed at the very highest level of piano building. Some of the features that make these pianos special are incredibly thick, maple rims; further stiffening by the company’s patented “centripetal tension resonator”; and heavy, ultra-rigid cast iron string frames. The result of this “over-building” is incredible projection and sustain. In addition, the soundboard crown is supported by a machined inner rim surface, crowned ribs, and a concave bridge root. There is at least anecdotal evidence that these designs result in longer soundboard life.
