Piano facts

Brand: Mason & Hamlin | Model: A4 | Length:  5’8″ | Finish: likely walnut | Year: around 1926 | Serial number: 34289 (the serial number is unknown; this case number likely provides an approximate age) | Bench: upholstered bench included

Golden age, American-made piano

Mason & Hamlin, the most prominent golden age competitor to Steinway, has many premium design features:

  • Thick, hard rock maple rim
  • Centripetal tension resonator
  • Angled straight side
  • Rib-crowned soundboard
  • Soundboard crown supported by bridge and inner rim
  • Tunable aliquots
  • Bent, not cut, treble bridges
  • Full perimeter plate

This piano is fully functional and has been partially rebuilt (refinished, new strings, tuning pins, and hammers, shanks, and flanges installed approximately 35 years ago). The soundboard, pinblock, and remaining action parts are original. Fundamentals such as sustain and tuning pin torque are acceptable, but the piano needs at minimum a cleaning and several missing ivory keytops to be replaced. In time, comprehensive servicing such as friction treatment, voicing, and regulation would be desirable. The piano has a firm touch and a medium tone. The finish is elegant but a bit worn.

This piano is suitable for a beginner- to intermediate-level students. It is also a beautiful furniture piece.

We are able to help with moving and servicing the piano, although these items are not included in the advertized price.
